i have made a little tutorial here [link]
i explained the rendering too. its an old picture, i used scanline + amb. occ. a lot of small omni lights to fake global illumination. i use mostly mental ray today, final gather is quite fast and doesnt flicker too much in animation :)

Stunning 3D artwork! I like the way you set up the light(s); make wonderful softshadows! The modeling is very well done; beautiful details and good job on UV/texturing! Also the DOF gives this image a great sense of power! :highfive:
